ON WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP
March is the month of the year when we talk about women in many respects. We celebrate Mother’s Day on March 25th, honouring the mother of the family or the individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. Worldwide this holiday has different meanings, is associated with different events (religious, historical or legendary), and is celebrated on different dates. International Women’s Day is another day that is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural, political and socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women, as well as gender equality and equal opportunities.
In Europe gender equality has been receiving thorough attention, with various interventions (regulations) being applied, and these long endeavours have resulted in more gender balanced situations in politics, academia and other public services. Statistics show that women occupy 40.4% of seats in the EU parliament, the leaders of the European Commission and EU parliament are women, Nordic countries are led by female prime ministers and in four EU countries, women hold more than half of ministerial positions. However, the best gender equality intervention is to focus on equality of talent and potential — to have equal opportunities, which is not shown in practice, particularly not in the corporate world, where the majority of CEO positions are held by men.
Studies have indicated that women have different leadership styles than men. Traits like benevolence, empowerment and engagement, an inclusive, team-building leadership style of problem solving and decision making are again and again revealed in these studies. So women are more inclusive leaders than men. What’s wrong with that? Probably nothing, but the problem is that these supposedly female leadership traits are most suitable for middle management. While team-building is vital for a middle management job, it isn’t the skill that is sought for executives. Senior leaders are paid to position their organization in its marketplace. Typical executive traits often include leadership capacity, vision, having a global outlook and strategic thinking. Are these traits that solely belong to men? Of course not — but they’ve certainly been marketed that way. Maybe women should start focusing on their potential to understand the marketplace and to use appropriate relations and connections to shape the senior leadership positions themselves.
Women are powerful agents of change, and the far-reaching benefits of diversity and gender parity in leadership and decision-making are increasingly recognized in all spheres. The case for balancing the power equation in leadership has never been more clear: elevating women in decision-making benefits politics, businesses, and communities. But progress in women’s leadership will not happen automatically. We need concrete actions to do it together: across governments, corporations, academia, non-profits, and civil society—to balance power in leadership and decision-making.
OSMA Academy offers some of these possibilities through our leadership programs. We invite women to be a part of the common path for making our world more balanced and fair.
So, keep going together and very welcome!
